We love to keep things locked up in our minds where only we can see it. You have this great idea, and you let it sit there and marinate. You think about it quite frequently and you know in your heart of hearts that it is a good idea. Except that it never leaves your head.

One reason for this is that it’s comfortable in your head. If the idea stays, there you don’t have to act on it. Why don’t you want to act on it? Because you are afraid of the idea being rejected from the outside world. What if it fails? What will people think of me?

Then undoubtedly, you see someone else already brining your idea to life, and you say, “see someone else is already doing it, nobody will want what I have.”

Getting An Accountability Partner Involved Super Charges Your Momentum

The solution, if you really want your idea to take flight is to get other people involved. Yikes, thats scary! Look at any great idea, or company, or accomplishment on this planet. Very rarely was it ever accomplished alone. “Yes but Tiger won all those golf tournaments on his own?” Far from the truth. His parents, his coaches, his caddies, his club fitters, his agents, and on and on all helped him get to the level that he was at.

Here at the Human Constant, I have two accountability partners and I can’t thank John Banghoff and Keith Sherburn enough for their support over these first 6 months. Not only are they keeping me on track, but they are pushing me forward and bringing new ideas to the table. When I wanted to quit, they kept me going even when that was a struggle.

So this week’s challenge is to think about something that you have had stewing in your head for a while. Can be as simple as beginning to exercise or as complicated as starting a business. Tell someone what you want to do and ask them to be your accountability partner. Ideally this is someone who hold in high regard that you don’t want to disappoint. Once its out there, that drive not to disappoint will help balance out all the other thoughts in your head telling you that you can’t, shouldn’t, or don’t want to do the thing you really want to do.
